Shandrea Pittman planned a birthday trip with her friends in St. Maarten Labor Day weekend. It was a dream trip as Pittman shared photos of sandy beaches and blue skies. While vacationing, Pittman learned that the island of St. Maarten was about to experience a category 5 hurricane. In attempt to stay safe, Pittman and her friends tried to leave the island but there were no flights available. They had no choice but to prepare for the storm. To stay safe, Pittman and her 5 friends locked themselves in a bathroom and braced themselves. Last Thursday, the catastrophic Hurricane Irma hammered St. Maarten and virtually destroyed the entire island. This was not the dream vacation that Shandrea Pittman had planned. It was a nightmare.
ogether, the 6 women held on to the door as powerful winds surrounded them. All night, the ladies prayed that someone would help them as the Hurricane caused power outages and the women had no way of communicating with their loved ones. Their fifth floor villa in the path of destruction, heavy furniture and debris trapped Pittman and her friends in that small bathroom space. Barricaded in the bathroom of her villa with five of her girlfriends for 19 hours, Pittman and her friends could barely breathe. Hours passed and Pittman was finally able to achieve a phone signal. She detailed the horrific details on her Facebook page along with shocking photos as well as a video of the damage. We couldn’t breathe. We took turns taking just cracking the door to get some air, limit air flow, food, water, bread, peanut butter. I stuck my arm out the door to record the villa. We didn’t know what was going on or how bad it was damaged, Pittman revealed to News 8 via Facetime about the terrifying ordeal. *** *** After being rescued from firefighters, the ladies were able to seek refuge in a hotel lobby. Pittman began to get the word out about the horror that she and her friends were experiencing. She updated her Facebook status and spoke with news stations via Facetime. In addition, she used the hashtag, Get Our Girls Home, to inform media outlets that she was stranded in St. Maarteen. Pittman and her friends had no idea when they would get home. *** After an horrifying ordeal, Pittman and her friends are headed to safety. After several calls and emails to the U.S., Pittman and her friends were rescue by the Dutch Military and are now headed to Puerto Rico.
