‘I would always call this guy’ – Lil Wayne reveals 2 Chainz started as his we*d dealer
During their recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Chainz and Wayne shared how their work relationship first got started.
“I mean, once we linked up, we were friends from there,” Lil Wayne explained.
“Just same type of attitude, cool, but I didn’t know he rapped at the time,” he added
And despite meeting for the first time in an Atlanta studio, their work relationship didn’t start off with music, but rather with marijuana aka weed.
“Uh… Wayne wanted cannabis,” 2 Chainz revealed, which Weezy elaborated on, “And so every time I would go to Atlanta and I wanted to speak about that one thing, I would always call this guy,” referring to 2 Chainz.
Eventually, 2 Chainz told Wayne that he could rap, playing Lil Wayne the track “Duffle Bag Boy.”
“The moment he said he rapped and the moment I heard it, we got to the studio, and I did this hook for the song, ‘Duffle Bag Boy.’ And the rest is history,” he explained.
The duo maintained their friendship and are just weeks away from releasing the follow-up to their 2016 collaboration album ColleGrove, Welcome 2 ColleGrove, which is slated for a November 17 release.
“Me and Wayne’s album drops next month. This is a full circle moment,” 2 Chainz announced during an interview. ”It was built on a relationship. Wayne at the time, was the hottest artist in the world. He could’ve charged me eight million, but he didn’t.”
