Pep Guardiola showers praise on British-Nigerian player Samuel Edozie after his third goal in three games
Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has praised young British-Nigerian winger Sam Edozie after the teenager scored three goals in three games during pre-season friendlies .
Born in England to Nigerian parents, the 18 year old has been a key figure in the club’s U23 ranks since moving from Millwall on July 1, 2020.Presently, he is part of Guardiola’s squad preparing for the new campaign and has stepped up to the demands of senior football scoring in each of the club’s last three matches.
Edozie has made the most of the chances he’s been given after replacing Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling, who are still not back from their breaks.
Edozie arrived from Millwall for an initial £400,000 last year, and was in the right place at the right time to score the early opener as City beat Blackpool 4-1 on Tuesday night this week.
Edozie also scored against Preston and Barnsley in the last week, giving him a three-goal pre-season haul that only Riyad Mahrez can match.
City boss Guardiola now says the youngster has plenty of promise.
“Like all of them, as a young talent having a special quality, a guy who gets to the box with the intention to score the goal is important for wingers,” he said.
“He’s an incredible young player, good pace. Be patient with him. With minutes they play good and this is important.”
The will face Leicester at Wembley in the Community Shield on Saturday, and Edozie has a chance of making the squad, with Guardiola saying last week he would be relying on ‘second team’ players.
